At 91ɬ (SKC), we believe education is most powerful when it is rooted in tradition and community. We recently opened our doors to the world for a unique opportunity. Consequently, we are honored to announce that SKC is officially featured in the latest season of the award-winning series The College Tour, now streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

A Reflection of Our Community

This episode is more than a look at a campus. Instead, it is a celebration of our “living classroom” here in the Mission Valley. This feature highlights the revitalization of our ancestral languages and groundbreaking research in STEM. Furthermore, ten remarkable students and alumni shared their authentic stories to help build this episode.

For instance, you will hear from students like Wacey McClure. He carries the voices of our ancestors into the future through language studies. Similarly, Anna Robertson traveled from Alaska to find a home in our pre-dental program. These are not just success stories. Rather, they are “buffalo trails” of resilience, service, and innovation.

Education for Everyone

While we are a leader in Indigenous higher education, our doors are open to everyone. SKC is an open-enrollment institution. We proudly welcome Native and non-Native students from all backgrounds and over 60 different tribes. Whether you are from the local community or traveling from afar, you will find a supportive “family” here.

Coffee with President Munson

The feature includes an intimate “Coffee with the President” segment with our own Dr. Michael Munson. During this candid conversation, Dr. Munson reflects on her own journey as a student and leader. She explains how SKC supports students through a variety of unique needs. Additionally, she discusses our mission to meet the needs of our tribal nations. This includes our master’s program in Natural Resource Management and the nation’s only Tribal Historic Preservation program.

Join the Journey

It truly “takes a village” to bring a project like this to life. We are grateful to the students, faculty, and staff who shared what SKC means to them. Therefore, we invite you to sit with us for a while and experience the spirit of the Bison.

Whether you seek your own path or wish to learn about Indigenous higher education, we have gathered everything in one place. Explore the beauty and the heart of SKC today!

91ɬ (SKC) is thrilled to announce its selection as one of only 15 institutions nationwide to join Year 7 of the prestigious Metallica Scholars Initiative (MSI). This incredible partnership, backed by a generous $75,000 grant from Metallica’s All Within My Hands Foundation, marks a significant milestone for our college and community. SKC will leverage these funds to enhance access to high-quality, skills-based training for adult and secondary learners, directly supporting in-demand, high-paying jobs in the transportation and construction sectors.

The grant will provide direct assistance to students in our vital Highway Construction and Building Trades programs, aligning perfectly with the economic development priorities of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes. As SKC President Michael M. Munson emphasized, “it’s an investment in our students, our families, and our Tribal communities,” creating pathways to family-sustaining careers and elevating the image of skilled trades. Our existing programs, such as the comprehensive Highway Construction Training (HCT) program, which provides technical skills for heavy equipment operators and truck drivers, and the collaborative welding course, exemplify this commitment to workforce development.

The Metallica Scholars Initiative, launched in 2019 by All Within My Hands in partnership with the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC), has expanded significantly, now reaching 75 colleges across all 50 U.S. states and Guam, impacting an estimated 10,000 students. Metallica band member Robert Trujillo expressed immense pride in the scholars, highlighting the Foundation’s positive impact on putting “hard-working people on the path to careers in the trades”. This initiative’s proven return on investment, with graduates earning an average of 8.3 times their program’s upfront cost in their first year, underscores its transformative power.

At SKC, our mission is deeply rooted in providing quality education for American Indians and perpetuating the cultures of the Séliš, Ksanka, and Qlispe’ peoples, empowering students to improve their families and communities through service and research. This partnership with Metallica and its All Within My Hands Foundation embodies our core values, especially the 4Cs – Cultural Awareness, Communication, Critical Thinking, and Citizenship – by fostering engaged contributors who are ready to make a tangible difference in their communities. We are incredibly proud to join this movement, building resilient communities through education.

SKC is proud to announce an exciting 8-week Welding Course, launching this August, in collaboration with the Pacific Northwest Ironworkers and the Confederated Salish & Kootenai Tribes. This intensive program is meticulously designed to equip you with essential welding skills, preparing you for immediate entry into rewarding field operations and contributing to vital workforce development within our communities.

Hands-On Learning & Direct Path to Apprenticeship

This course offers comprehensive, hands-on training in shielded metal arc welding, equipment setup, and critical safety practices. What truly sets this opportunity apart is that those who complete the course successfully are eligible to enter the Ironworker apprenticeship program. Apprentices earn a starting wage of approximately $25.40 per hour, with consistent increases over a four-year training period, leading to a journey-level ironworker earning around $50 per hour plus national mobility, living wage, healthcare, and retirement benefits – a secure foundation for your career. Furthermore, participants will receive a $100 daily stipend for full attendance, supporting your journey as you gain valuable skills without significant financial burden.

Empowering Our Communities

SKC is committed to empowering Native communities by filling unmet needs and fostering strength from within. This Welding Course exemplifies that mission, prioritizing enrolled members or first-generation descendants of the Confederated Salish & Kootenai Tribes for the limited 10 training positions. By training skilled professionals, we collectively build a more resilient and sustainable future for all.

Limited Enrollment – Secure Your Spot!

The course runs Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, from August 11 to October 3, 2025, at the SKC Highway Construction Training facility in Pablo. Attendance and punctuality are required. Applications are due by Friday, July 18, at 5 PM. Don’t miss this chance to build a tangible skill set, secure a high-demand career, and charge into your future with confidence, grounded in tradition!

Ready to build your career? Apply for the SKC Welding Course by July 18th!

Both the welding and the SKC admissions processes must be completed.

91ɬ (SKC) is proud to announce the appointment of Dr. Michael M. Munson as the institution’s next president, following an extensive national search and approval by the SKC Board of Directors. Dr. Munson will assume the role effective June 23, 2025, becoming the sixth president in the college’s distinguished history.

Dr. Munson brings more than two decades of experience in higher education, leadership, and Native-serving institutions. Her commitment to academic excellence, cultural perpetuation, and community empowerment aligns strongly with SKC’s mission to provide quality post-secondary educational opportunities for Native American students and others.

“We are honored to welcome Dr. Munson home to the 91ɬ community,” said Eldena Bear Don’t Walk, Chair of the SKC Board of Directors. “Her vision, leadership, and deep understanding of our tribal college values will guide SKC into an exciting new chapter.”

Dr. Munson most recently served as Associate Vice-Provost of Tribal Research and Graduate Education at Washington State University, Pullman, where she led initiatives to expand academic programs, support student success, and strengthen community partnerships. A passionate advocate for Indigenous education, she has also been active in state and national efforts to promote equity and access in tribal and rural communities.

“I am humbled and excited to return to 91ɬ in this capacity. SKC is an institution with a rich cultural legacy and a powerful commitment to student achievement,” said Dr. Munson. “Together with the SKC community, I look forward to building on the college’s strong foundation and advancing its mission for future generations.”

Dr. Munson succeeds Dr. Sandra Boham, who retired after eight years of service to the college.

The 91ɬ (SKC) Summer TCU Conference, “Moving Forward through the Fog,” is set to convene from July 28-31, 2025, on the SKC campus. This annual gathering offers a vital opportunity for professionals across Tribal Colleges and Universities to connect, share insights, and strategize for the future. For many of you, this conference is a familiar and valuable touchstone, and we look forward to welcoming you back.

This year’s conference is designed to foster a dynamic exchange of ideas, addressing the strategic themes and operational challenges that are most relevant to TCUs today. We aim to provide a comprehensive platform for learning and collaboration, equipping attendees with the knowledge and connections needed to navigate the evolving educational landscape.

The conference will commence on Monday, July 28th, with registration followed by dinner and a keynote address by Scott Davis, Assistant Secretary – Indian Affairs, U.S. Department of the Interior. His remarks will undoubtedly offer valuable perspectives as we embark on a productive week.

Throughout Tuesday and Wednesday, attendees will participate in focused breakout sessions addressing key areas of university administration. These sessions will delve into critical themes such as the current status of financial aid regulations, strategies for optimizing budgets with limited resources, and the latest in accreditation practices. Discussions will also cover essential aspects of campus life, including mandatory reporting, Clery Act compliance, and developing human-centered human resources policies.

A significant strength of this conference lies in its emphasis on cross-departmental dialogue and the sharing of best practices. The program is structured to facilitate collaboration among various administrative functions, recognizing that the challenges and innovative solutions within TCUs are often interconnected. This collaborative spirit culminates on Thursday, July 31st, as the conference joins forces with the TCU Presidents’ Summer Meeting. This unique session provides an invaluable opportunity to share key insights and themes from our discussions directly with TCU leadership, ensuring that our collective work informs the broader strategic direction for all Tribal Colleges and Universities.

The Yakama Nation’s deep-seated commitment to forestry, a practice rooted in ancestral knowledge and refined with modern science, offers a powerful example of sustainable land management. Their efforts, recently highlighted by ICT News, resonate strongly with the mission of 91ɬ (SKC), which champions the preservation of Indigenous knowledge and the promotion of environmentally responsible practices.

The Yakama Nation’s approach to forestry goes beyond simple resource extraction. They are actively engaged in restoring and maintaining the health of their forests through strategic initiatives like prescribed burns and selective thinning, designed to mitigate wildfire risks and enhance biodiversity. This holistic strategy demonstrates a profound respect for the land and its intrinsic value, a value that SKC instills in its students.

Just as SKC empowers students with the skills to address challenges through an Indigenous perspective, the Yakama Nation balances economic development with ecological preservation. Their sustainable timber harvesting and ecosystem restoration efforts serve as a testament to the enduring wisdom of Indigenous communities.

The Yakama Nation’s success story underscores the critical role Indigenous knowledge plays in environmental stewardship, a principle that SKC upholds in its curriculum and community outreach. By showcasing these exemplary practices, SKC celebrates the vital contributions of Native communities and inspires future generations to become conscientious stewards of our shared environment.
